What’s in a typical lesson?
There’s no such thing as a typical student, so why would there be a typical lesson? I tailor each lesson to the student’s age, experience, priorities and goals. All lessons share some common elements though. Technique is really important as it allows us to sing as efficiently and safely as possible. Poor technique is much harder work than good technique! All lessons incorporate warm-ups and exercises designed to promote good technique and posture. Repertoire is chosen to reflect your individual goals, particularly as you move from beginner to intermediate and advanced stages.
If you’re into music theory that’s great. I can incorporate it into your singing lesson, or for a more deep-dive approach I can provide separate theory lessons.
Practice in between lessons is essential as that’s where the real progress happens. I will advise on what to practice and how much, but after that it’s down to you.
Overall my goal is for you to leave your lesson feeling better than you did before, feeling like you’ve made progress, and feeling inspired to go home and practice!

Do I have to take exams?
Taking graded music exams is a great way to measure progress and have clear goals to work towards. Lots of people like to be able to say that they have achieved a specific level and have the qualifications to prove it. Over the years my students have achieved grades in classical music, musical theatre and rock and pop, with the majority achieving merit or distinction.
However, exams are not for everybody and I have plenty of students who choose not to go down that route.
Are there opportunities to perform?
I love it when my students perform! Every year I put on two recitals where you can perform in front of your friends and families in a proper concert setting. For my younger students I put together ad hoc youth singing groups, and have coached some of my older singers to give solo performances at my regular choir concerts. I’ve also supported students with school performances, and students who want to perform at special events. Recently I taught a lady so that she could sing to her husband and family at their diamond wedding anniversary celebrations. Or maybe you just want the confidence to take your singing out of the shower and get up and do the karaoke at the office do?

How much does it cost?
Lessons currently cost £20 for 30 minutes / £40 for 1 hour. On top of that, you may need to buy copies of music or backing tracks (I will advise). There are additional fees associated with entering exams.
